How to Compress an Image

Drop or select a JPG, PNG, or WebP image into the drop zone above. Use the quality slider to control how much compression to apply. 80% is a good starting point for most photos. Click Compress to process the image and compare the Before and After previews side by side. When you are satisfied with the result, click Download to save the compressed file. Move the slider and click Recompress at any time to try a different quality level.

What Quality Setting Should I Use?

80% is a good default: most images show no visible degradation at this level. 60–70% works well for web thumbnails and email attachments where smaller file size matters more than absolute fidelity. Below 50% produces noticeably smaller files but visible artifacts appear on photographs, especially around sharp edges and high-contrast areas. PNG files with flat colors or transparency may not compress much at any quality setting; that is normal. PNG uses lossless compression internally, so there is less room to work with. Try converting to WebP instead for better compression of PNG sources.

Why Is My Compressed File Larger?

This happens when compressing an already-highly-compressed JPG at a high quality setting. The re-encoding process decodes and re-encodes the image data, and at high quality settings the overhead of the new encoding can exceed the savings. The tool will flag the result as negative savings. Try lowering the quality slider to 70–75% for already-compressed JPG files, or use the original uncompressed source when available.

Why Use a Browser-Based Image Compressor?

Your images never leave your device. This matters for photos of documents, personal photos, client work, or any image you would rather not transmit to a third-party server. This tool uses the browser-image-compression library, which runs entirely in a background Web Worker, keeping the main thread responsive even on large files over 20 MB. No account required. No file size limits. No upload step.
